The Nikko hotel is unfortunately very uniform. It is lacking a real style, it is impersonal. The pictures on their website, are, at best, very advantageous. The location is great, and so much can be done within walking distance. The room was clean and the service very good.

Very convenient location to cable cars, shopping, restaurants. I have mixed feelings about this hotel. People were friendly, housekeeping staff were quite efficient and very friendly; the patio adjacent to the fitness center on the 5th floor was awesome. We were assigned a room on the 24th floor (requiring key access in the elevator). The room on first glance was great. Immaculately clean, great views from the windows. The rooms were obviously recently remodeled.... that being said, there are several big misses in the layout. First, the only lit mirror is a small mirror above the sink which is on the far end of the counter. While the counter is large enough for two people to get ready at one time, it is impossible as the mirror so small. Next, there are two electrical outlets in the bathroom, one on the opposite end of the counter from the sink and the other behind the toilet. Both are far enough away that the cord of both the hair dryer, and my curling iron could not reach - so fixing my hair became an exercise in gymnastics. Why they didn't just put a mirror the full length of the counter, escapes judgement. Clearly the designers never used the bathroom. The shower and tub were very nice. Next, the closet is such that you have to continuously move the hangers out of the way in order to close it. A small detail, but with the safe in the closet, it makes using both sides difficult. There were nice outlets and chargers adjacent to the bed and on the table. Yet one of the regular outlets on the wall would not accept a standard plug. Finally, the heating and cooling cycles - so eventhough we set the temperature for cooling at night, we both woke up hot - as the heat seemed to turn on. While quiet at night, the heating and ventilating system also seemed to 'squeak'. So I liked the location, walking distance to Union Square, Starbucks in the lobby, cable cars around the corner, but found the room we stayed in was a fit frustrating. We were on vacation, so it didn't matter as much. If I would have been in town for a special occasion, I would have been stressed while getting ready.

I have stayed in many hotels in my years but I have never ever stayed in a hotel where the staff were so lovely and attentive. The lady who checked us in was great, she offered us an upgrade from a petite queen to a deluxe king because of our Expedia status, high speed internet and the swimming pool were also free because of this too. Danny in the pool area was great, he showed us round and took time to chat to us. The bell man was also very attentive, always checking to see if we needed help or transport. All of the staff members were super friendly and polite, great training. The room was lovely. A "bay view" room on the 19th floor. We couldn't see a huge amount of bay but at night it was clearer when you could see the tankers on the water. The view was wonderful, half city view/half bay view in my opinion. The king bed was medium soft, I found it very comfortable with crisp bedding. Buster the dog stuffed toy was placed on the bed every day by housekeeping, only for us to move him off again at night. He is available to buy for $29. It is well known that the hotel recently closed for a "total" refurbishment. I believe the petite queen rooms weren't refurbished at that time as they were quite new anyway. I have to say I don't believe the bathroom nor wardrobe were new in our deluxe king room as they were already showing slight signs of wear that shouldn't appear after only 2-3 months of use. Both were satisfactory though. The only other slight negative for the room is that there are no drawers provided. There was a wardrobe with 11 hangers. We stayed for a week, 2 people with 7 days clothes. Yes, we did hang up a few items in the wardrobe but the rest of our clothes had to stay in the suitcases and it was awkward to find items each day. We used the pool almost every day, it was quiet with a maximum of 4 people in one morning. They play relaxing piano music over the speakers. The pool isn't massive and is shallow but adequate for a few laps. It was warm too. There is also a hot tub there. We loved the apples available in the gym and had one every day. We visited the cocktail bar one evening. The decor is pink and sparkles and the cocktail was delicious but a little pricey. Unfortunately there was a group of loud women in there at the same time and we couldn't hear our own conversation, so we only stayed for one drink. Location wise, it was amazing. Very close to Union Square and Powell Street/Market Street areas, just a tram/trolley or bus ride away from everything else. It is noted by other reviewers that its close to the Tenderloin but I didn't find it seedy or intimidating in anyway. There was the occasional person sleeping rough a few blocks away but I found that in all areas of the city that we visited. When I go back to San Francisco, I will definitely stay at the Nikko.

This was the worst check in I have ever had to suffer through. We were part of a conference that was hosted by the hotel. The conference started at 2pm in their banquet rooms. As we registered for the room there was a place to state if you needed an early check in. We were in from the airport at 1 as we had communicated. We were greeted and told that a room would be ready momentarily and they would text us when available. The concierge communicated that he could see a room was available and called housekeeping to hurry it along...all to now avail. My husband left to the conference at 2( joined by his associate that had already checked in at Parc 55). There was a restroom off the lobby to use but it needed a key. Haley, from the front desk, said it was only to be used by guests. I said I was patiently awaiting becoming a guest! She gave me the key saying, "Make sure you bring it back." 3 times going up to the desk just brought a comment of 3:00 is check in. At 3:00 I return to the desk and am told that the room we have assigned you is not ready. I communicate that I don't care what room just one now please. At no point did any management make an appearance. The next day I asked to see a manager to explain what happened. Not what I expect in a fine hotel. She became very confrontational stating 27 of you were trying to check in early and guests don't leave till 11. I saw her as I was checking out and remarked it would have been nice to have some gesture of apology. Evidently she did but it was never delivered. Worst service I have ever had from the front desk. On a positive note the concierge was wonderful and even texted to make sure I had gotten to the store I had inquired about. Also the food and staff at the restaurant were wonderful. The hotel is only one block from the Tenderloin area which is quite unsavory. I prefer to stay elsewhere in the city.

The Hotel Nikko is a little gem in San Francisco. Nice big rooms, good location (near all the shops if that's your thing), well equipped gym, excellent conference center, nice pool and excellent staff. Honestly the staff were amazing. Special mention to being a dog friendly hotel and having it's own in house pooch. If you do stay here go to Sears for breakfast around the corner.
